Month End Melee

Month End Melee - Monday 26 January 2026

This was the first melee under the revised rules and 25 members turned up on a dull and chilly afternoon to take part. Seven members also attended, but they chose to play in social games.

After handing out the card numbers, the teams gathered on their respective pistes and the first end began with the sounding of a whistle, to denote the start of the one hour timed games.

Harry teamed up with Michael against Lucy and John. The two MEM winners for 2025 were on opposite sides for this match, so it should be interesting. Lucy and John got off to a great start, and were 7 nil up in no time at all. Michael and Harry made a tactical decision to allow Harry to play off first. This decision paid off, because they gained points and gradually levelled with Lucy and John. Then an unlucky strike gave Harry and Michael a four point gift to take the lead. The competitive game ended with a win for Harry and Michael.

Diane and Ruth teamed up against Kevin, Tony H and Carol S and the two ladies were losing, until they somehow managed to get a 5 at one end. This brought them level and as both teams reached 11 the game was all to play for. However, Diane and Ruth managed to win the game.

In round 2, Harry was drawn with Carol S against Ruth, Sue B and Mark. This was an extremely close game throughout. Carol played some excellent lead boules which caused the triple team no end of problems. The game went to the wire at 12 all. But Carol and Harry managed to win this game.
Diane and Michael played against Ken H and Barbara. Diane and Michael led all the way through and ended up with a substantial win.

So, two game wins to Harry, Diane and Michael. What would be the outcome after the final game?
Ironically, Diane was drawn with Harry to play against young Ken S and Barbara. This was an interesting game, but Diane was playing some excellent pointers. This game ended 13 - 3. Meanwhile, Michael also won his third game, so who would be the month end melee winner?

Back in the clubhouse for a welcome cup of tea or coffee and lots of cake, supplied by the recent Birthday boys and girls.

The scores were checked and the winners announced by Tony.

In third place with 3 wins and +12 was Michael T who receives 5 points.
In second place with 3 wins and +14 was Harry who receives 6 points.
In first place with 3 wins and +17 was Diane who receives 7 points. Congratulations to Diane, a magnificent first-time melee win and putting her at the top of the leaderboard.
