Month End Melee

February Month End Melee

Another soggy day at Mirfield Petanque club saw 26 members turn out for the February Month End Melee.

Following overnight rain, sleet and snow the terrains were under water in places but Jim and his band of terrain helpers did a superb job of sweeping water away and on some of the pistes bailing water with a dustpan and tarpaulin. Well done chaps thanks to you the day wasn't a washout.

Numbers drawn we were soon underway.

Nev and Brian Clarke were drawn against a triple comprising Colin, Cheryl and Jackie. Brian was on superb form and the pair soon had the triple on the ropes and ran out 13 - 2 winners. In one of the other games Harry was chuffed to be drawn in partnership with last month's Melee winner Ruth but they struggled against John and Steve and couldn't manage to get ahead losing 9 - 13. Some of the other games went close and at the end of the first round Nev and Brian were in the lead at +11.

Round 2 and Nev would regret beating Colin's team in the first game as Colin got his own back and some beating Nev and Irene 13 - 1. Nev and Irene were staring a Fanny in the face (as it were) at 10 - 0 but they managed a point so the dreaded trophy stayed in the box. Lots of 13 - 12 games in this round and at the end Brian was in the lead with 2 wins and +20.

On to Round 3.

With 5 players on 2 wins this was going to be an interesting round. In the end only one player kept his nerve to run out with 3 wins though. This was Rod Green on 3 wins and +10. Fortunately the third game saw Harry get his only win of the day when partnering with Colin. Harry finally got his act together and produced some accurate pointing and a few good shots.

Into the clubhouse to dry out and warm up.

Harry scrutinised the figures and announced the results in reverse order.

In third place with 2 wins and +13 was Brian. In second place with 2 wins and +15 was Paddy but in first place with 3 wins and +10 was Rod. Well done Rod.
